Coverage

International Health Insurance

Medical cover that works across borders, for people who live, sail or work away from home.

What it is

A health plan that isn't tied to one country. You choose where in the world it covers you, and it pays for hospital care, doctors and emergencies there.

Most plans also include medical evacuation and repatriation, which matter when the nearest good hospital is a flight away.

Your options

Worldwide excluding the US

Full cover everywhere except the United States. The usual choice for sailors based in the Caribbean.

Best for: keeping the premium down

Worldwide including the US

The same cover with US treatment added. Costs more, because US care costs more.

Best for: time in Florida each year

Short term travel medical

Emergency cover for a set trip or a delivery passage, from a few weeks to a year.

Best for: one season or one passage

Questions

Is this the same as travel insurance?

No. Travel insurance covers emergencies on a trip. International health insurance is your main health plan, for routine care as well as emergencies.

Can I keep it if I move countries?

Usually, as long as your new country is inside your area of cover. Tell Princess before you move and she'll check.

Do I have to pay the hospital and claim back?

For planned treatment, many carriers pay the hospital directly if you call them first. For smaller bills you usually pay and claim.

Which carriers does Princess work with?

For international cover, Cigna Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions. She'll show you plans from both, side by side.
